A Softer Way to Share Your Baby’s Gender: A Sustainable Garland DIY
Hello Momma,
There are so many ways to share the news of your baby’s gender, but not all of them feel aligned with slow living, sustainability, or the tender season of pregnancy and postpartum. This garland was created as a gentle alternative. No balloons. No plastic. Just natural, repurposed materials transformed into something meaningful and beautiful.
This garland was made entirely from items I already had at home. Cotton yarn saved from previous projects, dried florals reused from earlier seasons, and small hand-tied yarn bows placed between each floral bundle. It’s a simple craft that invites intention, creativity, and reuse.
Why Choose a Sustainable Garland 🎀
Single-use decor often ends up discarded after one moment. This garland is designed to move with you through different stages. It can be used for a gender reveal, a baby shower, or a nesting party, then repurposed again in the nursery, birth space, or even during labor as a grounding visual.
Choosing natural materials like cotton yarn and dried florals keeps things biodegradable, low-waste, and soft in both look and feel.
Materials You’ll Need ✨⬇️
Cotton yarn in pink, blue, or neutral tones
Dried florals from old bouquets or previous projects
Extra yarn for hand-tied bows
Scissors
Everything here can be sourced from what you already own, making this an accessible and sustainable DIY.
How to Make the Garland 🧺⭐️
Cut your yarn to the length you’d like your garland to be.
Create small bundles of dried florals and tie them along the yarn using simple knots.
Hand-tie small bows from extra yarn and place them in between the floral bundles for softness and detail.
Alternate colors or keep the palette neutral and cohesive.
Hang along a wall, doorway, mantle or shelf.
Tips for Using This Garland Through Pregnancy and Postpartum 🧺
Use it for multiple moments. This garland works beautifully for a gender reveal, baby shower, or nesting party, then transitions seamlessly into nursery decor.
Bring it into your birth space. Familiar, handmade items can offer comfort and grounding during labor. Hanging something you created can add a sense of calm and intention. Choose decor that lasts. Opting for pieces that can be reused reduces clutter and supports a slower, more mindful postpartum environment. Craft as nervous system care. Gentle, hands-on projects like this can be a soothing way to slow down during pregnancy and early postpartum without overstimulation.
Store it thoughtfully. When not in use, wrap the garland loosely in paper or fabric to preserve the dried florals and reuse it again in future seasons.
As part of my springtime DIY series, I’ll be sharing more ways to use natural, repurposed materials to create beautiful moments without excess.
Wishing you all the healing!
