How Do I Make My Bathroom Space Cozy for Postpartum Recovery?
hELLO mOMMA,
When we think of postpartum recovery, most of us picture the bedroom, stocked with pillows and soft blankets, or the kitchen with nourishing meals and snacks ready to go. But there’s one space that often gets overlooked—your bathroom.
The truth is, your bathroom will become one of the most important spaces for your recovery. It’s where your body does much of its healing work, and it deserves just as much attention and care as the rest of your home. By setting up your bathroom with intention, you can transform it from a simple, functional space into a cozy sanctuary of healing.
Here are my favorite ways to make your bathroom space cozy for postpartum recovery:
1. Make Sitz Bath Tea (Fresh or Freeze for Later)
One of the most soothing rituals during postpartum is a sitz bath. A simple herbal tea blend, brewed and poured into a sitz bath basin, can help reduce soreness, promote healing, and create a moment of calm in your day.
Make your Sitz Bath Tea ahead of time—either brew it fresh or prepare a large batch and freeze it in ice cube trays. That way, when you need relief, all you have to do is drop a few cubes into warm water.
2. Choose Your Recovery Items Ahead of Time
In the blur of early postpartum days, the last thing you want is to be digging around for what you need. Spend a little time before birth choosing your recovery essentials.
Think about:
• Which herbal sprays feel right for your healing
• Which peri bottles are easiest to use
• Any healing balms or oils you want nearby
Having these ready removes the stress of decision-making later and ensures that everything you need is within arm’s reach.
3. Add Little Touches of Comfort
Your bathroom doesn’t have to feel clinical. A few small, intentional details can make a big difference:
• A soft towel that feels gentle against healing skin
• A candle to bring in calming light
• A sprig of fresh eucalyptus hanging in the shower for a spa-like scent
These little touches remind your nervous system that you are safe, cared for, and worthy of a gentle recovery.
4. Keep Your Sitz Bath Out (Not Hidden Away)
One of the biggest mistakes I see is when families tuck the sitz bath basin into a cabinet or drawer. Out of sight often means out of mind.
Instead, keep your sitz bath in a basket right where you’ll see it. This small shift makes it much easier to use regularly. And when you use your sitz bath often, you support faster healing and more moments of self-care.
5. Cozy Up While You Gather
This might sound small, but wear your coziest slippers while you set up your bathroom. When your body feels warm and soft, your mind naturally shifts into a nurturing state. That gentle presence is exactly what you need while preparing your healing space.
6. Assemble Your Baskets
Organization is everything postpartum. I recommend creating two baskets:
• Postpartum essentials basket – peri bottles, herbal sprays, pads, balms, and whatever else you need.
• Sitz bath basket – your sitz bath basin, herbal tea, and anything else you like to add.
Keeping these baskets separate means you won’t be scrambling, and each use becomes an easy ritual instead of a stressful task.
7. Create Your Cozy Space
Finally, bring it all together. Set up your Sitz Bath Tea, your baskets, your sprays, your soft towels, and any little extras you’ve chosen. Step back and notice how the space feels.
You’ll see your bathroom transform into more than just a functional space—it becomes a cocoon of healing. When you step into that cozy bathroom, your body and heart will know: this is where I’m cared for.
Postpartum recovery doesn’t just happen—it’s something you can prepare for and make beautiful. By giving attention to your bathroom, you’re giving attention to yourself. These small touches are not about perfection; they’re about creating an environment that supports you in your healing journey.
